In a significant development for sports fans nationwide, Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have reached a new carriage deal, ending a prolonged blackout of Bally Sports channels for Comcast customers. This resolution comes after months of negotiation and a temporary halt to broadcasts that started at the beginning of May. Comcast’s Xfinity customers can now look forward to enjoying live, local broadcasts of their favorite teams starting in August.
Diamond Sports Group, which owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner, has been navigating bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11 for the past 16 months. The new agreement with Comcast, one of its largest distributors, marks a critical step forward in their efforts to restructure.
David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group, stated, "Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity."
A Welcome Return for Fans
This deal comes as a welcome relief for many fans, particularly those in key markets such as Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami, where Comcast maintains a strong presence. Xfinity customers who subscribe to the "Ultimate TV" package will be able to watch live, local MLB, NBA, and NHL games once again.
Additionally, Bally Sports offers a streaming app, providing in-market viewing options for fans of the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers. However, fans of the Braves and Twins will need to use the broadcast channels for their local game coverage. Those interested have until August 30 to upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package, which comes with a three-month free trial period, after which the package costs an additional $20 per month.
Focus on NHL and NBA Agreements
While this agreement with Comcast resolves a significant issue, Diamond Sports Group’s work is far from over. The company is now focused on finalizing agreements with the NHL and NBA to ensure continued distribution of their content. "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," said Preschlack.
The timing of these agreements is crucial, with the basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching. Diamond Sports Group intends to present a plan of reorganization to the court once these negotiations are complete. "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court," Preschlack added.
Looking Forward
As part of its restructuring, Diamond Sports Group currently holds the linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams and remains committed to securing and solidifying its partnerships with various leagues and teams. The success of these efforts will be vital in navigating their Chapter 11 proceedings and ensuring a stable future for their sports broadcasting capabilities.
In summary, this new carriage agreement between Comcast and Diamond Sports Group not only reinstates access to beloved regional sports broadcasts for countless fans but also represents a pivotal moment in Diamond Sports Group’s ongoing restructuring efforts. With a renewed focus on securing deals with the NHL and NBA, the company is poised to navigate the challenges ahead and continue providing comprehensive sports coverage to its dedicated viewers.
