CeeDee Lamb Returns to Cowboys with $136-Million Extension
The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant leap toward solidifying their offensive lineup by securing star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a robust four-year, $136-million contract extension. This lucrative deal includes an impressive $34 million average per year salary, $100 million in guaranteed money, and a $38 million signing bonus, making Lamb the second-highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL, tied with Nick Bosa and trailing only Justin Jefferson, who tops the list with a $35 million average per year.
Lamb recently rejoined his team and received a warm welcome at The Ford Center, where his return was marked by an outpouring of cheers from his teammates. "We just heard a bunch of cheering, and we turn around, and he's walking through things like 'It's great to be back,'" recounted fellow Cowboys player Jalen Tolbert.
The 24-year-old wide receiver missed all organized team activities, minicamp, and training camp in Oxnard, California, during his holdout. Instead, Lamb worked out in Texas and South Florida, adding 15 pounds of muscle to his physique. Despite his absence, Lamb remained connected with his teammates and coaches through his iPad, often exchanging morning texts with Tolbert and staying updated on team activities.
Before signing the extension, Lamb experienced moments of uncertainty during the negotiation process. "I had no doubt. But I will say I was getting impatient," he admitted. The tension culminated in a pivotal moment when his agent FaceTimed him, initially suggesting that negotiations were faltering. Lamb's immediate response was resolute: "Well, where do I sign?"
Head coach Mike McCarthy has been transparent about Lamb's role on the team, stating that it will remain unchanged from last year. "CeeDee's role will not change. He was our premier receiver last year. Our approach with him will be similar. I don't see that changing," McCarthy emphasized.
Through it all, Lamb made sure to maintain a strong rapport with quarterback Dak Prescott. He was dedicated to their on-field chemistry, making it a point to practice with Prescott at Prescott's backyard field whenever he returned from his training in Florida. "We got our reps in for sure. The best thing about it, him having a field in his backyard. So anytime I came back home, it was time to throw with Prescott," Lamb shared.
Now that his contract situation is resolved, Lamb is focused solely on the field. "We had a businessman conversation. Just had to clear the room. Everything is behind us. I'm not worried about nothing. We got what we needed to get done. Now it's time for me to go ball," Lamb conveyed with determination.
Lamb’s holdout undoubtedly created a sense of anxiety among fans and the organization, but his return has revitalized the team's spirit. Tolbert captured the sentiment perfectly: "Everyone was like, 'Hey Cee[Dee].' Just having that moment with him after he got what he deserved. We know that he works hard for what he got. So it's special to see a guy like that."
Reflecting on his journey through the negotiation period, Lamb expressed immense gratitude. "I can't really put it into words. I tell them I'm grateful to be here every moment of the day. This whole process was very crazy for me, as we all know. Very bittersweet," he admitted. With his added muscle and renewed focus, Lamb is prepared to take on the season with resilience. "I've got some body armor on me. I can take a couple more hits. I'm prepared for my opportunities," he assured.
Lamb also took the opportunity to underscore the importance of extending Prescott's contract, emphasizing the synergy between them. "You look at our numbers together, they're at the top of the charts. I have no doubt that they're going to get a deal done. We all know that I want Dak here. Jerry wants Dak here, too, so let's just get this under control and kill the speculation and let's go win," Lamb urged.
With Lamb back in the fold and a fresh contract in hand, the Dallas Cowboys are poised for a promising season ahead. As Lamb aptly put it, "Now it's time to go ball." Cowboys fans everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to seeing their star receiver back in action.
