The Patriots and the Chicago Bears adopted a similar strategy this year, heavily leaning towards offensive acquisitions.
Key Additions and Extensions
The Patriots have not shied away from spending big in free agency, shelling out approximately $233 million on contracts, with a significant $138 million allocated to offensive players. Notably, running back Rhamondre Stevenson received a contract extension with $17 million guaranteed, a move applauded by former Patriot Rob Ninkovich. "It's also an appreciation thing for a player who has performed well. I like what they've done with him and David [Andrews], which is something I'm not sure would have happened prior to this year," he remarked, pointing out the team’s new approach to valuing their players.
Center David Andrews also secured a contract extension, receiving $8 million guaranteed, ensuring that the Patriots' offensive line retains its experienced anchor.
Defensive Moves
While the spotlight was on the offense, the Patriots did not completely neglect their defense. Marcellas Dial Jr., selected in the sixth round from South Carolina, was the solitary defensive pick. "To be the only defensive player is crazy," said Dial, who joins a cornerback lineup featuring Jonathan Jones and Christian Gonzalez. Marcus Jones is set to compete for the slot cornerback position, while Alex Austin and Isaiah Bolden, picked in the seventh round, will vie for their spots in the team. Marco Wilson’s acquisition off waivers further bolsters the Patriots' defensive roster. The team also extended Jahlani Tavai’s contract for three years, with a base value of $15 million and potential earnings up to $21 million. Tavai's performance last season, playing 74% of the defensive snaps and 78% of the special teams snaps, earned him this extension.
Building a Balanced Team

Clayton White, commenting on the intangibles of Dial, said, "He has the size, strength, and speed to play at that level. But more importantly, I think he brings the intangibles and the will. He's a great locker room guy, great team player, and great special teams player, too."

With rookies reporting for training camp on July 19 and veterans on July 23, the Patriots are keenly aware of the rigorous preparation required for the upcoming season. "I love his energy. He plays hard. You need a guy like that who can do multiple things but also get everyone in the right spots.
