As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue their preseason march, the team's offensive struggles have become a significant focal point. Across two preseason games, the Steelers' offense has managed to put up a scant 15 points, a fact underscored by their recent 9-3 loss this past Saturday night.
One glaring issue has been the persistent lack of pass protection, a problem that limited any opportunity for quarterback Justin Fields to find an offensive rhythm. Of the 15 points scored in the preseason, only three have come with Fields on the field, highlighting the challenges faced by the team’s offensive line.
Offensive Challenges
Russell Wilson's performance further illustrated the team's offensive difficulties. Across five series against the Buffalo Bills, Wilson was unable to orchestrate a single scoring drive and faced significant pressure, resulting in three sacks. Head coach Mike Tomlin has been vocal about the impact that poor pass protection has had on the team’s performance.
"It's somewhat of an incomplete study because you just don't get a chance to see them operate or us operate or us establish rhythm and personality when you're not winning possession downs," Tomlin remarked.
The initial phase of the game was particularly problematic. "And we weren't. The first three or so series of the game, it was three and out, and you're not going to get an opportunity to establish rhythm or play the way you'd like as an individual or a collective," Tomlin added, emphasizing the need for better execution early in the contests.
Pass Protection Woes
Tomlin was clear about the necessity of improved performance. "We've got to do a better job in pass protection than we did -- not only in possession downs but just in general," he stated. "I was really upfront with the group about it in that regard, that can't be a problem for us. We've got to be better than we were tonight in that area."
The game against the Bills highlighted specific weaknesses, such as the inexperience of Broderick Jones, who struggled in his adjusted position at right tackle under the pressure from Bills’ Greg Rousseau. Adding to the team's woes, rookie first-round pick Troy Fautanu remains sidelined with an injury, and veteran center/guard Nate Herbig may potentially be out for the season due to a torn rotator.
Upcoming Preseason Finale
As the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions looms, Tomlin's focus will be on closely monitoring the offensive line performances to decide the starting quarterback for the final game. The coaching staff's evaluation process will be key in addressing the offensive line's issues and ensuring better protection for the quarterbacks as the regular season approaches.
In summary, while the Steelers have shown determination, the offensive line's poor pass protection remains a significant hurdle that needs overcoming if the team is to establish any form of offensive rhythm. Tomlin's candor with his team underlines the urgent need for improvement, and the upcoming game against the Lions will be a critical test for the Steelers as they seek to rectify their shortcomings before the regular season kicks off.
