Tyler Guyton Shines as Cowboys’ New Star Left Tackle
When the Dallas Cowboys selected Tyler Guyton as their 29th overall pick in the first round, fans were hopeful and optimistic about the fresh talent joining their roster. Little did they know, Guyton would quickly become a pivotal piece in their offensive line, demonstrating an intelligence and confidence that has set him apart both on and off the field.
Guyton's journey in football began at the University of Oklahoma, where he started 13 of his 14 collegiate games at right tackle. Despite his early focus on the right side, Guyton has showcased exceptional skill at left tackle during the Cowboys' training camp, showing his adaptability and resilience. His rapid adjustment to the Cowboys' system has not gone unnoticed. Dak Prescott remarked, "His intelligence and confidence for sure. It's showing on the field, too. The guy has picked up everything we have thrown at him... He comes back with the same mindset and does win it that time."
One of the many highlights of his training camp performance was his ability to stonewall defensive star Micah Parsons during a padded practice. Even head coach Mike McCarthy was impressed, stating, "I thought he had some nice reps against Micah."
Guyton’s growth has been notably supported by his teammate Tyler Smith, who occupies the left guard position. Both are Texas natives, which has likely helped them forge a strong bond on and off the field. Guyton expressed his gratitude, saying, "He's helped me out a lot. He's like a big brother to me." Tyler Smith echoed this sentiment, praising Guyton's physical attributes, "It's not very often that you find a human being who measures how he does, 6-7, 330 and has light feet and can just move and just bully dudes. The sky truly is the limit for him and his development."
Beyond his football prowess, Guyton's character and personality have also endeared him to his teammates. For instance, his participation in a team jeopardy night left a lasting impression on Dak Prescott, who reflected, "The dude jumped up there and spelled it as fast without any hesitation as I have ever seen. Still mind blown to be honest with you." Additionally, Guyton shone during a rookie karaoke session, where he performed "Mary Jane" by Rick James, commenting, "It's a song that everybody knows is groovy and that would work."
However, Guyton's journey hasn't been without its challenges. An illness forced him to miss three consecutive practices, but upon his return, he participated in a limited capacity. "I'm feeling better, for sure. I'm just under the weather, working my way back now," Guyton said, showcasing his resilience and determination to return to full strength.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys are preparing for a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, where the coaching staff and fans alike will watch how Guyton continues to integrate and perform within the team. His predecessor, Tyron Smith, left big shoes to fill, but as Dak Prescott wisely pointed out, "He has to be Tyler Guyton. Doesn't really matter who played here before him... At the end of the day, you just need to be yourself and the best version of yourself."
Guyton’s journey, from his collegiate days at Oklahoma to his promising start with the Cowboys, is a testament to his hard work, adaptability, and sheer talent. The Dallas Cowboys are optimistic that Tyler Guyton will be a cornerstone of their offensive line for years to come.
