NHL Draft Highlights 2024

Montreal Canadiens Make Strategic Picks

In a bid to strengthen their roster, the Montreal Canadiens made significant moves during the 2024 NHL Draft held in Las Vegas. With the No. 5 overall pick, the Canadiens selected Ivan Demidov, a highly skilled winger from Russia. Known for his dynamic play and offensive prowess, Demidov is expected to make an immediate impact on the ice.

In addition to Demidov, the Canadiens also secured Michael Hage at No. 21 overall. Hage comes from the USHL’s Chicago Steel, where he had an impressive season, recording 33 goals and 75 points. His ability to find the back of the net and create scoring opportunities will undoubtedly add depth to Montreal's forward line.

Utah Hockey Club Lands Mikhail Sergachev

Arguably one of the most talked-about trades of the draft, the Utah Hockey Club acquired Mikhail Sergachev from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Sergachev, with an $8.5 million cap hit, brings a wealth of experience and skill to Utah's defense. In exchange for Sergachev, Tampa Bay received J.J. Moser, Conor Geekie, a second-round pick, and a fourth-round pick. The trade was partly influenced by Tampa's salary cap constraints, as the Lightning also have Ryan McDonagh with a $6.75 million cap hit.

Utah was not done with just adding Sergachev. They also acquired John Marino from the New Jersey Devils, along with a fourth-round pick, in exchange for two second-round picks. Solidifying their blue line further, Utah signed Sean Durzi to a four-year, $24 million contract, ensuring a formidable defensive lineup.

Wild Opt for Buium at No. 12

The Minnesota Wild made an astute pick by drafting Zeev Buium at No. 12 overall. Buium, a defenseman from the University of Denver, is known for his solid defensive skills and offensive contributions. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 186 pounds, Buium has the physicality and skillset to excel at the NHL level. Last season, he demonstrated his capabilities by recording 11 goals and 39 assists in just 42 games. Buium will join forces with Brock Faber, the 2024 Calder Trophy runner-up, promising an exciting future for Minnesota’s defense.

Sharks Secure Top Pick

The San Jose Sharks emerged as big winners in the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, securing the coveted No. 1 overall pick. With this selection, the Sharks chose Macklin Celebrini from Boston University. Celebrini, who had an exceptional season with 32 goals and 32 assists in 38 games, is expected to be the cornerstone of San Jose's rebuilding efforts. His offensive talent and playmaking abilities make him a promising prospect for the Sharks as they look to regain their competitive edge.
